James W. Garrison:
a message from our founder/director
In October 1995 my eighteen-month-old son, Forrest, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (or cancer of the blood). On that day our family began a life-changing journey. There were very few support groups and little information available about Forrest's disease. The most difficult part was the unknown road ahead. Forrest was treated by CHOA (Colorado's Hematology Oncology Associates), and after four years of long visits to the treatment center, and even longer stays in the hospital, he won his battle against the cancer that had attacked his young body.
Shortly after Forrest was diagnosed our family started "For The Children", a support group dedicated to serving children with cancer and their families. We wanted the families to have a place to gather and share their stories, cry, laugh, and pray together. We had wonderful camps and many gatherings. Eventually our name was changed to "Colorado's Childhood Cancer and Disabilities Camp, Inc.", and just recently, with our continued growth, we have changed our name to "Cancer Camps, Inc.. In 2008 our dream of owning our own camp facility was realized and "Camp Dawn's Hope" was born. In 2010 a second camp, "Walk-About Camp at Night Hawk Ranch", was added due to the generosity of Tom and Dorothy Evans.
As with all non-profit organizations, Cancer Camps, Inc. is possible due to the generous support of our donors and volunteers. Please see our FUNDRAISING page for ways that you can help.
I almost lost my son to cancer, but on the darkest day of his illness, I vowed to spend the rest of my life serving cancer patients and their families. I know that Forrest, and Cancer Camps, Inc., are alive and well due to the grace of God. It is my hope that our camps will be an inspiration and blessing to all who visit.
